Acupuncture can help for back pain during pregnancy
Pregnancy causes changes in the hormonal system. In particular, altered progesterone levels can have an effect on the ligaments of the body.
This is why even in early stages of pregnancy, before the weight of the growing baby has a chance to put strain on the musculoskeletal structure, women can experience all sorts of pain such as carpal tunnel, lower back pain and sciatica.
Acupuncture can be used at all stages of pregnancy and is commonly used in the alleviation of lower back pain during pregnancy.
There can be any number of organs and meridians involved in the acupuncture treatment of lower back pain during pregnancy so it is important to have a thorough diagnosis and assessment by a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine.
How are the Kidneys involved in Lower Back Pain?
Traditional Chinese medicine texts state that the kidneys control the lower back and loins. If the kidney energy is deficient then the area can’t be nourished with energy, resulting in weakness and pain. Often this type of deficiency pain can get some relief with a gentle massage or even just by placing hands on the area.
Are there any other symptoms that may accompany the back pain if caused by deficient kidneys?
When the kidneys are deficient there could be other symptoms such as a feeling of cold in the lower back or flushed cheeks in the afternoon or waking up in the middle of the night with night sweats.
Can other meridian blockages contribute to back pain?
Commonly, the gall bladder and bladder meridians can become stagnated which can lead to pain. Sometimes the liver can also become involved if there is a history of irritability or depression. Laura Callaghan of the Newtown Acupuncture Centre opposite Wellington Hospital says, “There is a saying in Chinese medicine that says “In order to alleviate pain, use acupuncture to promote the free course of energy flow in the meridians.”
Laura also goes on to comment that, “It is important to work in conjunction with the midwife and doctor because in some cases there could be kidney stones or other serious conditions causing the back pain, which need to be treated by other medical professionals.“
