This is where the herb mugwort, artemisia vulgaris, is made into small cones as pictured above and placed on the acupuncture points on the skin. The cones are lit with an incense stick and then burnt down until about eighty percent of the original size and then taken off when the patient starts to feel the sensation of heat.
Are the cones the same size?
The size of the cones can determine what type of therapeutic action is required. How densely the cone is compacted is also important as for example, tightly packed cones have a stronger dispersing effect. Sometimes specific acupuncture points are used and other times body areas are treated with chinetskyu to disperse energy.
Is this specialised moxibustion technique warming or cooling?
Chinetskyu moxibustion is used to take heat out of the body. This may seem contradictory but it is a bit like fighting fire with fire. For example, if there is heat in the lungs or in certain skin diseases, chinetskyu can be applied onto the back while the patient is siting up to draw out the internal heat.
Can chinetskyu be used for sports injuries?
The application of chinetskyu is very broad in its action and is often also used in musculo-skeletal problems. Often an injury sight will have inflammation and chinetskyu can be used to bring the inflammation down which seems in great contrast to other practitioners who may advocate the use of ice to bring down the swelling or inflammation. It could be used for tight tendons in the body or stiffness in the shoulders.
I am a practitioner and would like to learn about chinetskyu
Alan Jansson who heads World Acupuncture has delivered over 70 workshops around the world including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Indonesia, South America and Europe.
