Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to address women’s health problems including the inability to conceive. There have been many research studies demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture improving IVF success rates. One study as reported in the British Medical Journal involved over 1000 women who received acupuncture within the 24 hour period before embryo transfer.
The study also found that acupuncture increases the success rate of keeping the child past the crucial 12 week period by as much as 87%. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to prevent miscarriage. There is currently another research study being undertaken by New Zealander Debra Betts in Wellington on acupuncture and the prevention of miscarriage.
Medical director, Peter Illingworth of IVF Australia now advises all women to seek acupuncture during the embryo transfer stage. In Wellington, at Fertility Associates, there is now a team of female acupuncturists offering pre and post embryo transfer acupuncture treatments for those patients who are unable to travel to see their regular acupuncturist.
Heiko Lade and practitioners at The Acupuncture Clinic treat patients with fertility issues and those planning to undergo IVF. Patients must travel to Wellington from Hawke’s Bay to undergo IVF and it is suggested to have the pre and post IVF acupuncture treatments in Wellington.
