A question I often hear in practice is:
“Why do you keep changing my herbs when the last one was working?”
Or sometimes:
“I used to take this herbal formula and at first it worked really well… but now it seems to have worn off.”
Both are great observations—and actually, they highlight something very important about how the body works.
🌿 Your Body Isn’t Static — It’s Always Adapting
Your body is constantly adjusting and responding to what you give it.
When you start a herbal formula, especially one that is well matched to your condition, for example yo may notice:
- Symptoms improve
- Digestion changes
- Energy shifts
- Sleep may improve
But as your body responds, your internal balance starts to change.
So the formula that was appropriate at the start…
may no longer be the appropriate fit a couple of weeks later.
🔬 A Bit of Science (in simple terms)
Modern research gives us a few clues as to why this happens:
1. The body adapts (just like with caffeine)
If you drink coffee every day, you may notice it becomes less effective over time.
The same idea can apply to herbs—your body becomes familiar with them and responds less strongly.
2. Your system becomes more efficient at processing them
Your liver can actually get better at breaking down substances over time.
This means the same dose may not have the same effect after a while.
3. The body aims for balance
Your system is always trying to stay in equilibrium.
If something is pushing strongly in one direction, your body may gently push back.
🌱 The Traditional View
In traditional herbal medicine, this has been understood for thousands of years—just described in a different way.
Rather than saying the herbs “stop working,” we say:
👉 “The pattern has changed.”
As your symptoms improve:
- What was once too much becomes balanced
- What was blocked starts moving
- What was deficient begins to recover
- Or has a new pattern emerged, have had a bout of flu or had a stomach bug or recent emotional upset
So naturally, the treatment needs to evolve as well.
🔄 Why Not Just Stay on the Same Formula?
Think of it like this:
If you were training at the gym, you wouldn’t:
- Lift the exact same weight
- Do the exact same routine
- At the exact same intensity
…forever.
Eventually, progress would stall.
Herbal treatment works in a similar way:
- Sometimes we adjust the dose slightly
- Sometimes we swap one or two herbs
- Sometimes we change direction completely
These small changes help keep your body responding and progressing.
💊 What About Supplements and Fixed Formulas?
You may have noticed that some supplements or “set formulas” are taken the same way every day, sometimes for months or even years.
While they can be helpful, there is a limitation to this approach:
👉 They don’t change as your body changes.
Taking the exact same combination of vitamins or herbs, in the exact same amounts, day after day, can lead to:
- Reduced responsiveness
- Less noticeable effects over time
- A mismatch between what your body needs now vs what it needed at the start
- And the practitioner can’t predict what the patient will do in the future that may upset the pattern or what illness the patient may get in the future
🥦 A Simple Way to Think About It: Food
Nature doesn’t give us the exact same meal every day—and that’s a good thing.
When you eat a variety of foods:
- You get different concentrations of nutrients
- Vitamins and minerals interact in different ways
- Your digestion adapts and stays responsive
This natural variation helps your body:
👉 Absorb better
👉 Utilise nutrients more effectively
👉 Stay balanced
Compare that to taking the exact same supplement combination every day—
it’s a bit like eating the same meal over and over again.
Even if it’s a “good” meal… eventually, it may not meet all your needs.
⏳ How Long Before a Formula “Wears Off”?
There’s no exact rule, but clinically we often see:
- 1–2 weeks: strong initial response
- 2–4 weeks: effects may plateau or shift
- Beyond that: the body may need a new approach
This doesn’t mean the herbs have stopped working—it usually means:
👉 They’ve done their job, and it’s time for the next step
💬 Real Patient Experience
It’s very common to hear:
“At first I felt a big difference… but now it feels like nothing is happening.”
In most cases, this is actually good news.
It often means:
- The original imbalance has improved
- The body has adjusted
- A new, more refined treatment is needed
🎯 The Goal: Keep the Momentum Going
By adjusting your formula regularly, we:
- Stay aligned with what your body needs right now
- Prevent treatment from becoming less effective
- Continue moving you forward, step by step
🌿 In Summary
Herbal formulas are not meant to be one-size-fits-all or “set and forget.”
They are:
- Personalised
- Dynamic
- Responsive to change
So when your formula changes, it’s not a step backwards—
👉 It’s a sign that your treatment is working and evolving with you.
