Acupuncture can be used to treat acne
Acne is usually caused by a hormone imbalance during puberty. When testosterone hormone levels are too high, it can cause acne and this is why some body builders regardless of age or sex also develop acne. Sometimes the contraceptive pill is prescribed to counter acne but some of them actually make the acne wore and long term use of the contraceptive pill leads to many other adverse side effects including infertility and strokes. There are hundreds of drugs that come and go on the market that have attempted to treat acne. More recently, Accutane has been taken off the market because Roche had to pay out millions of dollars because it had caused birth defects and inflammatory bowel disease. Roche turned over more than 56 billion New Zealand dollars in 2012.
Research published in the American Journal of Physiology revealed that acupuncture can control acne. Whilst acupuncture can benefit the skin, it also improves overall physical and mental health. This includes depression and mood swings associated with the menstrual cycle. The researchers concluded that acupuncture is both safe and effective.
Ancient Chinese medicine physicians over 2000 years ago worked out that acupuncture points on certain energy lines connecting the major organs influenced what today we know as the hormonal system. Treating these acupuncture points on the meridians regulated the menstrual cycle and as a side effect eliminated their acne. In teenage boys ancient physicians noted that their aggressiveness and impatience improved. Today we would say that testosterone levels had become regulated.
The liver is quite important in treating acne. Imagine when your liver is working hard to eliminate toxins coupled with the ongoing daily stress as well as dealing with a developing hormonal system. Chinese physicians viewed that the blood in the liver gets overheated and heat naturally rises. Once the heat and toxins from the liver have reached the head, the body tries to expel it through the skin and acne results. A simple home herbal treatment to help acne is to drink honeysuckle flower herbal tea as it is helps eliminate toxins and cool the blood down.
In traditional acupuncture there are specific points that have the function of cooling the blood and this then helps reduce acne.
Acne also can come back later in life at menopause and women having treatment for facial rejuvenation using cosmetic acupuncture have observed that their hot flushes as well as their acne all improved.
